GOO 40th anniversary

Thank you for visiting the Get Oil Out! website.

Current involvements include: "Birth of a Movement."

Santa Barbara is recognized by many as the birth place of the Modern Environmental Movement because of the response to the catastrophic 1969 oil blowout from "Platform A" in the Santa Barbara Channel. Over 800 square miles of ocean were engulfed in a death trap, and 35 miles of the coastline became covered with thick smelly crude oil.

Get Oil Out! formed immediately as people looked for a way to do something at a grass roots level. "The Birth of a Movement" looks at where our fossil fuel addiction has taken us over the last 40 years, and what is happening to replace it with clean, renewable sources of energy. This eight-minute version is a prelude to a longer version of the movie currently in production by Cage Free Productions and Spreading Solutions Productions. The film is intended to educate, encourage, and empower. Enjoy!

January 28, 1969 Oil Spill
The environmental disaster that inspired the formation of GOO!

oil spill

On the afternoon of January 28, 1969, an environmental nightmare began off California's coast in the Santa Barbara Channel. Get Oil Out! was formed in the first hours following the devastating 1969 oil blowout from Platform A. This catastrophe helped inspire the modern environmental movement, and the creation of many important local environmental organizations, including the Community Environmental Council, the Environmental Defense Center, and UCSB's Environmental Studies Program. GOO! continues to protect the SB Channel from oil development and to promote renewable energy.
